Tales, legends, folklore... : the rich CULTURAL heritage of the Semois Valley
TALES and legends
from the Semois valley
The Semois Valley National Park is home to many legendary sites, linked to tales and legends sometimes inspired by historical events.
At the heart of these stories are a whole host of fantastic characters: fairies, “nutons” (small cave-dwelling creatures), witches, giants and even the devil, all associated with unique places (springs, trees, rocks, etc.).
Even today, many sites have retained a name inspired by these tales: Château des Fées (Fairies’ Castle) in Bertrix, la Pierre du Diable (Devil’s Stone) in Alle-sur-Semois, le Saut des Sorcières (Witches’ Leap) between Les Hayons and Auby, Roche Namouzette (Namouzette Rock) in Les Hayons, etc.
The Chiny International Tales Festival keeps this local folklore alive each year, bringing together dozens of storytellers and thousands of curious onlookers.

FOLKLORE and ancient skills, particularly linked to the cultivation of Semois tobacco
Over the centuries, the inhabitants of the Semois Valley have developed unique techniques and skills linked to specific activities: basketry, weaving, tobacco growing, clog making...
The National Park's aim is to showcase these traditions, which can also be seen in kermesses, bonfires, carnivals and other patron saints’ celebrations.
